Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) results when we spend large amounts of uninterrupted time on display devices. Some of the symptoms of CVS include blurred vision, dry or irritated eyes, difficulty refocusing the eyes, headaches, and neck pain.

6 Steps to Avoid Eye Strain in The Office

  1. Keep your monitor 20 inches away from your eyes – You should be able to sit comfortably with correct posture while maintaining a distance of at least 20 inches. Your computer mouse and keyboard should be easily accessible. A mouse far away will cause you to reach and lean in. Sitting too close can cause eye strain and neck and back fatigue.
  2. See your doctor yearly for an eye exam – Schedule a yearly eye exam to ensure you have the correct prescription. Trying to use an old prescription will cause eye strain.
  3. Get computer glasses –Computer glasses are designed to help you see the monitor at the recommended distance and block blue light that can lead to eye strain.
  4. Adjust the lighting – Bright overhead lighting can cause eyestrain. Try to keep the room lighting equal to the brightness of your monitor. Also, position your monitor to reduce reflections and glare.
  5. Blink – When we stare at screens, we tend to blink less. Remind yourself to blink to help distribute and replenish the moisturizing tear film.
  6. Remember the 20-20-20 rule – Every 20 minutes, spend 20 seconds looking at something at least 20 feet away.
